Artist Statement
Technology has greatly influenced this generation in positive ways by providing mass global communications and further advances into new discoveries testing the human capabilities, but unfortunately we often tend to overlook the negative effects. We should be aware of the amount of technology that disconnects us from the real world and what's right in front of us. It disengages people from conversations and interactions, which inturn dehumanizes us.
For my sustained investigation, I decided to create various advertisements to promote or campaign against different technologies. The advertisements for the products being sold, will indirectly show the negative effects of the different technologies on humans. For example I made keychains for self-driving cars and the keychains were saying to trust technology because it’s safe and you don't need seat belts, but technology can glitch and not catch everything so we can blindly just rely on technology over our own intelligence. The campaigns against the technologies will directly show one way or more, why the product is negatively impacting humans. I made a brain hacking ad where the bunny mask symbolizes humans and the computer hacks the brain. Instead of an Apple computer I made a Carrot computer to symbolize that humans are drawn to computers and the Carrot computer hacking the bunny represents how desirable the technology looks yet it’s the devil in disguise.
The advertisements display how technologies make people forget to take care of themselves or show the harmful effects it has when people are too distracted by the promises of the technology. Half of the advertisements will be the classical 2D posters or video ads, others will be 3D sculptures of the product, because advertisements come in different forms and shapes. I try to make the products look nice and promising, but are actually damaging our humanity by sucking us into the virtual world and not letting us go. We become too addicted to technology and the newest advancements that we forget about our natural selves and worry more about what's going to make life easier.
In the beginning I was struggling to come up with a way to display my artwork as I was originally going to paint all my pieces on a canvas, but I remembered the The Real Cost advertisements that play right before Youtube videos and I became inspired to turn my artwork into ads. It was difficult to find artists that tackled technology issues on impacts on technology on humans as most of them drew dystopian cityscapes, but I found inspiration from 송원택 (Insta @dirac77), Inward (Insta @inwardsound), and Сергей (bulvarov_x). 송원택 created my inspiration for the preservation of plants in the vast future where the outside world is in ruins and overpollited plants have to be put into chambers to be kept alive and thriving. Inward creates a nice setup for a futuristic or technology dominated society with flying mobiles, which sets up my idea of the distant future. Сергей is a motion designer and has many ideas for technology, and I used his thinking to create the IHolo, and the automatic translator.
I had many outside influences from different TV shows and movies that I watched. I got the idea of preservation from the movie Wall-e, where the world is in chaos and where there are almost no plants. Black Mirror and The Twilight Zone episodes inspired the creation of Brain Hacking and Cloning. The further I went along with ideas for technology the more I realized, my works connect to the past or the present in some way. In IHolo I put Youtube in as the site the advertisement was being shown on, but in the future Youtube could be forgotten like MySpace. Another example would be the Self-Driving Cars, on the keychain I put a key for a car on it, but cars are becoming more automatic and newer cars don’t need keys to open or start up a car anymore. They all connect to the past as a reminder of what technology used to be.
From the beginning I wanted to create a timeline of different forms of tech and machinery.I struggled to form an actual timeline as I changed my mind about the design or the concept of a piece and its advancement would change the date that the technology would be featured. For instance I always wanted the concepts of Virtual Reality and Hoverboards and Electric Scooters to be closer to 2020 since we already have the technologies out there, but it isn’t more universally used as much as phones. I always had the idea of preservation last as it would symbolize a more distant and dystopian future where we have overlooked nature and are now in danger of plant extinction from pollution, think Wall-e.
I noticed that some of the technologies were things that were already created like Virtual reality and yet some were things that people have been talking about, but haven’t been put on the market such as 100% self-driving cars. Then some were created from the top of my head like the IHolo. The further I went along with ads the advertisements became more 3D as a symbol for humans liking things to be materialistic and physical rather than mental and internal. I struggled to figure out how I wanted to unify all my pieces together. It wasn’t till January that I wanted a unifying factor for all of my pieces, and I wanted it to be the color blue. The blue is supposed to represent blue light, and how it is harmful to humans. Some of my works began to become more figurative like Brain Hacking and Preservation.
